  • One of the most unusual laws in Singapore is that chewing gum is not allowed. It is unlikely that visitors will find any gum in Singapore, as the trading of gum in Singapore is banned. Interestingly, even though gum is not allowed, there is a law that states that those who do not dispose of their gum properly will be punished with a fine of up to SGD1000(₩839,000). Q & A
Vocabulary
Q. What do you think about the ban on chewing gum in Singapore?
A. I was very surprised when I first heard about this law. At first, I could not understand why Singapore would choose to spend valuable time and resources on something as small as gum. However, upon further research, I discovered that one of the main reasons why gum was banned was because it was often found stuck on the train rails at subways. It was not only dangerous but it costs a lot of money for the government to clean. It also delayed trains, which was a great inconvenience to people who needed to ride the train. The chewing gum ban made sense after my research.
