In Singapore, crossing the road 50 meters or less from a crossing zone is considered jaywalking. This rule is common in many countries. However, Singapore takes this offense very seriously. Jaywalking in Singapore can result in fines of SGD1000(￦839,000) or 3 months in jail. Those who are caught more than once will receive double the fines. It is always better safe than sorry when crossing the road in Singapore.

싱가포르에서 횡단 구역에서 50미터 이하의 도로를 횡단하는 것은 무단횡단으로 간주된다. 이 규칙은 많은 나라에서 흔한 규칙이다. 그러나 싱가포르는 이 위법행위를 매우 심각하게 받아들인다.
싱가포르에서 무단횡단을 할 경우 1000달러(133만 9000원)의 벌금 또는 3개월의 징역형을 받을 수 있다. 한 번 이상 적발되면 벌금을 두 배로 물게 된다. 싱가포르에서 도로를 건널 때는 항상 안전하게 건너는 것이 낫다.

Q. Do you think that the rules for jaywalking are
adequate
in your country?

A. The rules for jaywalking are definitely not adequate in my home country Malaysia. Jaywalking is illegal in Malaysia but there is usually no one around to enforce the rules. There are usually no authorities around to catch any jaywalkers so jaywalking is very common. I don’t know anyone who has been punished for jaywalking in my country. Probably because of this reason, a lot of people in the country do not think that it is illegal. The other problem in Malaysia is that cars do not stop at zebra crossings! This makes the problem of jaywalking even worse. People crossing at zebra crossings is not any safer than jaywalking.
