Many countries in Southeast Asia have a reputation for corrupt governments. Singapore has built a reputation for an honest and transparent government that is free of corruption. The government has been consistent in its intolerance for corruption. Instead, the government focuses on building the trust and confidence of its citizens through transparency. The punishment for corruption is serious and includes the repayment of bribes as fines.

Q. What do you feel about the
politics
and corruption in Southeast Asia?

A. I think there is an assumption, especially in Southeast Asia, that politicians are corrupt. Unfortunately, this is not without good reason. For example, in Malaysia, I think most politicians have been involved in some kind of corruption. It could mean something as simple as accepting a bribe. This is unfortunately very common in Malaysia and many Southeast Asian countries. It’s hard for us to give politicians the benefit of the doubt, given the history. It makes me angry and sad at the same time, when I read about the corruptions, but unfortunately, I don’t think it will change any time soon.
