Pedestrian Crossing

  • 맛집영어 영어수강 영어교재 이미지
  • The laws around pedestrian crossings are very strict in Singapore, so it is very safe for locals and visitors to explore Singapore on foot. At pedestrian crossings, drivers have to wait for the light to turn green before driving. This is the case even if there are no pedestrians waiting to cross. By training, Singaporeans are generally very good with obeying traffic laws. On the odd occasion that a driver doesn’t obey the law at a pedestrian crossing, they can suffer a fine of up to SGD250.

Q & A
Vocabulary
Q. Are the laws around pedestrian crossing very strict in your country?
A. The laws concerning pedestrian crossings are very strict in America. A few years ago, about 16% of total traffic deaths in the United States were pedestrian deaths. I thought this was a very high percentage when I first found out about it. At that time, lawmakers were scrambling to pass new laws to protect pedestrians. I am not sure what the new laws are but I do know that nine out of the ten worst states were located in the south of America. Things have gotten a little better but there is still a long way to go.
