  • Malaysia has a very unique bathroom practice that is different from many parts of the world. Bathrooms in Malaysia have a metal water hose installed next to the toilets. Visitors might think that it is a water hose for cleaners to clean the bathroom with. However, it is for Muslims to clean up after themselves. Instead of toilet paper, Muslims in Malaysia prefer to use water to clean up after themselves. As a result, bathroom floors in Malaysia are usually wet rather than dry.

Q. Have you experienced bathroom cultures that are different than what you
are used to
?
A. Several years ago when I worked in Singapore, I experienced a bathroom culture shock. Instead of the usual toilet that a person can sit on, there were toilets that were in the ground. A person had to squat to use the toilet. Most bathrooms in Singapore have the modern sitting toilets. In the old building that my office was in, there was only one sitting toilet and several squatting toilets. It was something that I could not adjust to, so I always had to wait to use the sitting toilet. Although it was a shock, it was interesting to learn about the past of Singapore.
