In the French culture, hugs are considered very intimate. It is appropriate for romantic partners or when consoling someone. The French do not hug as a common greeting. Greetings in France are air kisses on the cheeks, also known as la bise. The number of air kisses as a greeting is different in different regions of France, but it ranges from two to four. Also, some regions in France start the air kisses from the right cheek while others start from the left.
