Q.
Describe any common superstitions from your culture.
A.
There are many in America. One of them is not to break a mirror. It is said that if someone breaks a mirror, they will have seven years of bad luck. Another is not to walk under a ladder, because that will mean bad luck for the person too. One of the most common superstition, maybe the most common one, is the saying, “Knock on wood.” This is usually said when someone wants to prevent something bad or negative. You may say something that is negative that you don’t want to happen and to prevent it from happening, you say, “knock on wood.” During the time that I worked in Singapore, I also heard about some interesting superstitions from Singapore and Malaysia. One is that they don’t whistle at night. They believe that if they do this, snakes will come into their house. Another is that if they shake their legs, they will shake their money away.
