One of the most important celebrations for the Chinese in Singapore is Chinese New Year (CNY). The Chinese new year follows the Chinese lunar calendar. Celebration includes family gatherings, delicious local delicacies, and the exchange of money packets called hong bao. One of the most anticipated activities during the CNY celebration is the lion dance competition held at Orchard Road. Lion dances represent mythical lion creatures from Chinese mythology and is thought to bring joy and happiness.

싱가포르에 사는 중국인들에게 가장 중요한 기념일 중 하나는 중국 설날(CNY)이다. CNY는 중국의 음력 달력을 따른다. 축하는 가족들의 선물, 맛있는 지역 별미, 그리고 홍바오라고 불리는 돈 꾸러미의 교환이다.
CNY 축하 행사 동안 가장 기대되는 활동 중 하나는 오차드 로드에서 열리는 사자춤 경연대회다. 사자춤은 중국 신화 속 사자의 춤으로 기쁨과 행복을 가져다 준다고 생각된다.

Q. Do you know much about Chinese New Year?

A. Yes, I do! I had a friend from Singapore when I was studying overseas. Her mother was Chinese and she would cook us special Chinese dishes every year to celebrate Chinese New Year. She wasn’t able to go back home to spend the holiday with her family but she would tell us all about the festivals, the performances, and the decorations! It sounded like such a unique experience. I have always wanted to visit her in Singapore during Chinese New Year so that I can experience what she told us about. I plan to visit her soon.
