Service professionals in Spain earn much higher salaries than those in countries like the United States. They do not count on tips as part of their salaries. Often tips are just a small change for these high-paid professionals. Many will even place any tips left for them into the cash register because the coins will just take up extra space in their wallet. For any truly excellent service, a tip of no more than 5% of the total bill can be left at the table.

Q. What is the largest tip you have ever given?

A. Unlike Spain, in America a good tipping percentage is about 15% of the total bill. This is because service professionals in America do not get paid as much as the Spanish service professionals do. I once tipped a waitress 200% of the total bill. I was visiting Texas for the first time and was eating at a cafe. The waitress was very sweet, smart, and helpful. She was very friendly and suggested places that we can go and things to do in Texas. She was the first one from her family to go to college and was working multiple part-time jobs to put herself through college. After school, homework, and part-time jobs, she still found time to volunteer at a children’s home and was still so cheerful and helpful to everyone around her. We found out these things about her from her colleagues. I felt moved to help and the only way I could was to tip her more.
