  • The official language of Australia is English. Australians speak through their nose so their English has a nasal tone. They tend to speak quickly and have an unusual way of pronouncing words. For example, Australians skip the last letter of many words. “What” becomes “wha.” “Meeting, going, and trying” become “meetin, goin, and tryin.” The Letter R is usually silent. “Car” becomes “cah.” The Letter T is also softened in Australian English. The word “matter” might sound more like “mehdduh.”

Q & A
Vocabulary
Q. Do you have a preference for British English, American English, or Australian English and why?
A. Personally, I have a preference for British English. Although I am American and I speak American English, I also believe that language should be spoken as it is written to make learning as easy as possible. This doesn’t just apply to English but to any language. American English can be lazy in some ways. There is not as much emphasis on vowels as there need to be. I notice this when I listen to songs by British singers and songs by American singers. You can always hear clearly the words sang by a British singer but not always by an American singer. This is the difference between saying the vowels and not doing so.
