Malaysians are not aggressive. They avoid showing their anger, especially raising their voices or shouting at those older or superior in rank to them. No matter how frustrated you may get in Malaysia, you should keep your cool. Getting angry will never go over well in Malaysia. Aggressive behavior is seen as “kasar”, which means rough and rude, and draws strong blame in Malaysia.

A. Compared to other cultures, the American culture can be seen as more aggressive. This is because we are raised to speak up for ourselves. This doesn’t mean that we are raised to shout, but to speak up when something is wrong. The ability to speak up for oneself and others is prized in the American culture. Still, I have a lot of American friends who do not like this way. Different personalities will exist in any culture. Some people are better at speaking up and some are not. But in the American culture, we are encouraged to do so in a calm manner.
