  • Handshakes between men are common in Malaysia. However, if you are meeting a Muslim woman, do not reach out to shake her hand. Physical contact between members of the opposite sex is not encouraged in Malaysia. If a woman starts off the handshake, you can return the handshake. Otherwise, just nod and smile at her. After Muslims shake your hand, they will touch their heart. This means that they greet you from their heart and symbolizes the connection and understanding between you.

Q & A
Vocabulary
Q. How do people greet each other in your culture?
A. In the South Korean culture, people bow their heads to greet each other. This is often accompanied by a handshake among men. To show respect when shaking hands, the right forearm is supported with the left hand. The elderly in the culture or someone more senior in position are always greeted by someone younger or more junior in position with a deeper bow. Colleagues also greet each other with a light bow of the head. Korean women usually nod slightly but will not shake hands with western men.
