Hispanic and Latino Americans originate from Latin America or Spain. Hispanics are people from Spanish speaking countries. Latinos are people who come from Latin America, which includes South America and the Caribbean. In total, there are about 60.7 million Hispanics and Latinos living in the United States. This makes up to 18.5 percent of the American population. Hispanics are the second fastest growing ethnic group after Asian Americans. Most Hispanics or Latinos come from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Salvador, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, or Colombia.

Do you know any Hispanics or Latinos from American television shows?

- One Hispanic/Latino American character that I know of is Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn Nine-nine. The actor, Stephanie Beatriz, has a Latino background. Her father is Columbian, and her mother is Bolivian. There is also another Hispanic/Latino American character on the show, Amy Santiago. The actor who portrays her, Melissa Fumero, is a Cuban American. I read that even though the ethnicity of their characters were not emphasized in the show, the creator of Brooklyn Nine-nine took great joy in casting female characters with different ethnic backgrounds in the show. It’s encouraging to see this development in the American entertainment industry.
