Open disrespect towards the Thai king, including images of him on the Thai baht, can land people in prison. People have even received lengthy sentences for social media postings against the monarchy. This respect for the monarch can be seen in a recent event where the king rode on a subway train to appear closer to his citizens. The royals sat on gold cushions with no any other passengers on the train. Uniformed officials, on the other hand, sat on the floor of the train.

Q. What do you think of the system of monarchy?

A. I think having a monarchy can help a county to preserve the cultural heritage of a nation. It is not the only way but it does help. For example, in England, Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the Church of England and she represents the values of the church to the people. On the other hand, one of the negatives about having a monarchy is that some of them can be privileged people who have lost touch with the common people. In the interest of democracy, I do not support the fact that much of the nation’s budget is spent in the support of the royal family.
