Q.
In many cultures, a watch makes an important gift for special life events, such as graduation, reaching adulthood, retirement, or passing a valuable watch to the next generation. Do you have such a tradition in your culture?
A.
Yes, we have such a tradition in the American culture. Watches make very popular graduation and retirement gifts where I come from in America. In the bigger cities of America, the tradition of passing a valuable watch, such as a Rolex, to the next generation is still practiced. A unique tradition exists for gifting someone with a watch or clock in America. If you give someone a watch or clock, they have to give you a cent in return. This is because of an old superstition that if someone receives a clock or a watch as a gift, it means that their time is running out, or death. But if the person gives money in return for the clock or watch, it is a purchase and not a gift, and that makes it okay. But because it is supposed to be a gift, they give you the least amount of money possible, a cent in America.
