Holding the Door

  • 맛집영어 영어수강 영어교재 이미지
  • Politeness and good manners are important parts of the English society. The English are famous for saying “thank you” more than any culture in their daily lives. They have a wonderful habit of holding the door open for the person behind them. Not doing so and allowing the door to slam on the person behind them is seen as very rude and ill-mannered.

Vocabulary
Q. In western cultures, there is a habit of holding the door open for others. Is there a similar culture in your country?
A. I come from America, a country which has the culture of holding the door open for others. However, I worked in Singapore for over five years, and I experienced a country that does not have the culture of holding the door for others. It was very shocking at first. I almost got hit in the face by a door, because I didn’t know that the person in front of me would not hold it. It took a while to get used to. I would sometimes get a pleasant surprise, when someone would hold the door or open the door for me. Interestingly, in those cases, it was always an American or European man.
