Q.
In western cultures, there is a habit of holding the door open for others. Is there a similar culture in your country?
A.
I come from America, a country which has the culture of holding the door open for others. However, I worked in Singapore for over five years, and I experienced a country that does not have the culture of holding the door for others. It was very shocking at first. I almost got hit in the face by a door, because I didn’t know that the person in front of me would not hold it. It took a while to get used to. I would sometimes get a pleasant surprise, when someone would hold the door or open the door for me. Interestingly, in those cases, it was always an American or European man.
