Rules for Naming Children

In Switzerland, there are very specific rules that need to be followed when naming a child. Before officially naming a child, the name must be approved by the registry office. If the authority office does not think the name is suitable, it can be rejected. Biblical names with negative images such as Judas or Cain are banned. Names of places and brands also cannot be used.

스위스에서는 아이 이름을 지을 때 따라야 하는 매우 특정한 규칙이 있다. 아이의 이름을 공식적으로 짓기 전에 등기소에서 승인을 받은 이름이어야 한다. 만약 등기소 사무실에서 이름이 적절하지 않다고 생각되면 거절 당할 수도 있다.
유다나 가인과 같은 성경적으로 부정적인 이름은 금지되어 있다. 장소의 이름이나 브랜드 이름도 사용할 수 없다.

? Is there any special meaning to your name?

A. The story of how I got my name is quite touching. It happened when my dad saw my mother in pain when she was giving birth to me. He thought about how unfair it was that I will only take my father’s family name when it was my mother who was going through all the pain. My dad wanted to include part of my mother’s name in my first name. Korean first names usually have two words. One word in first name is from my mother’s last name. I am grateful to my parents for giving me a name with a special meaning.
