  • The English practice the Continental style of dining, with the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right. They pay a lot of attention to good table manners. From a young age, children are expected to eat properly with a knife and fork. The only exception is for sandwiches, crisps, or fruits.

Q & A
Vocabulary
Q. What table manners did you learn growing up?
A. I asked my dad recently why good table manners were such a big deal when I was growing up. He told me that how we behave at the table shows who we are. Here are the table manners I learned.
First, the eldest at the table eats first. Even if you are so hungry that you can eat a horse, it's a common etiquette to let those older than you start eating first. This is also one of the reasons why Koreans are so keen to ask a person’s age.
Another one is that it is unusual to lift your rice or soup bowl while eating your meal. Some people will lift the bowl from the table and drink the soup. This is considered to be bad table manners. Soup should be eaten with a spoon from the bowl on the table.
