Q.
Many cultures have gifts that reflect their customs and beliefs. Are there any such gifts in your culture?
A.
America is a country made up of many immigrants who brought their culture and customs when they emigrated to the United State. Therefore, America is a country of many different cultures and customs. There is, however, one common custom that a lot of Americans practice. It is the custom of what a bride wears at her wedding. A bride must have something borrowed, something new, something old, and something blue. If she doesn’t, it is considered to be bad luck. Usually the bride’s grandmother will give her jewelry that has been in the family for a long time, “something old.” A bride’s dress is usually the “something new.” A friend will lend her something, her “something borrowed,” and the bride will usually wear a blue garter under her dress for her “something blue.” Only when she has all these things can a bride get married.
