In South Korea, dalgona is a fun, nostalgic street snack. Dalgona is its most common name but it has other names depending on the region. It has a sweet caramel flavor, lightly crunchy, and melt-in-your-mouth texture. It was my favorite childhood snack. I used to think that dalgona was uniquely Korean but I found out later that Canada has a snack similar to it.
Dalgona is made by melting sugar and baking soda until the mixture becomes similar to caramel-colored whipped cream. This mixture is poured out, cooled, and imprinted with a mold before it hardens and becomes brittle. Children in Korea play a special game with dalgona. They will compete with each other to see who can eat around the pattern on the dalgona without breaking it. Any child who succeeds in eating around the pattern without breaking the dalgona will usually be rewarded with another one by the store owner.
