Perhaps the hardest part of the trip to France is using the bathroom in a public area. It is not often seen on the street, and it is difficult to find on the subway, either. France installed 400 public bathrooms around Paris in 2006, in response to the complaints. There is often a fee to use public bathrooms in France. In many restaurants and cafes around France, visitors have to order something before they use the bathroom. Visitors can look for signs with ‘WC’ or ‘toilettes’. These signs show where the bathrooms are.

아마도 프랑스 여행에서 가장 힘든 부분은 공공장소에서 화장실을 이용하는 것일 것이다. 거리에서 자주 볼 수 없고 지하철에서도 찾아보기 어렵다. 프랑스는 불만에 응하여 2006년 파리 주변에 400개의 공중 화장실을 설치했다.

Q. Have you ever had

finding public bathrooms on vacation?

A. Yes, I have. I took a road trip once when I was studying in the United States. It was my first time driving outside the state where I was staying. On the highway, I tried looking for a rest area but I couldn't find one for four hours! It was only after I stopped at a gas station that I found out that there were no rest areas at the highways in the States. Instead, there are gas stations that everyone stopped at if they needed gas, snacks, the bathroom, or just a break. This was very different to where I come from. In South Korea, there are frequent big rest areas off the highways for people to take a break, have some food, and use the bathroom. These rest areas are sometimes a destination in themselves because they can be very large with many selections of food, and they are often accompanied by large signs at the highway to let people know where they are.
