Q.
What do people normally say when they greet each other in your country?
A.
People normally say, “Hi. How are you?” when they greet each other in America. The response is always, “I am fine, thank you.” People who are not born and raised in America will not realize that when someone asks you that, they are not really expecting a truthful answer. It is just a way to greet each other. It is different in personal relationships or with friends, of course. But in a personal relationship and especially in the workplace, it is just a way to greet each other. You should not answer truthfully but always just say, “Fine, thank you.”
