  • In Australia, the term ‘mate’ is commonly used in conversations. There are, however, some rules in using this term that visitors should be aware of. In Australia, only men use the term, women never do. Men should never say mate to a woman, or they will get slapped or hated. If Australians are pulled over by the police, they usually say, “Mate, I wasn’t over the speed limit.” Men can also use the term if they forget a man’s name.

Q. What do people normally say when they greet each other in your country?
A. People normally say, “Hi. How are you?” when they greet each other in America. The response is always, “I am fine, thank you.” People who are not born and raised in America will not realize that when someone asks you that, they are not really expecting a truthful answer. It is just a way to greet each other. It is different in personal relationships or with friends, of course. But in a personal relationship and especially in the workplace, it is just a way to greet each other. You should not answer truthfully but always just say, “Fine, thank you.”
